La Mata Beach: 4 Kilometres of Blue Flag Sand and Nature Park

Panoramic view of the 4 km La Mata Blue Flag beach

La Mata Beach is not simply "another Costa Blanca beach." It is 4 kilometres of wide golden sand that regularly receives the Blue Flag — an international mark of water quality and infrastructure standards. The beach is so wide that even at the height of August it never feels crowded.

We see this beach from our office window every day. Granfield Estate is located right on the La Mata promenade, and many of our agents start their morning with a run along this sand before work. This is not marketing copy — it is our daily reality.

Three beach zones

Southern section (near Torrevieja)

Closer to the La Mata shopping centre and the old villa district. The beach is slightly narrower here but more sheltered from the wind. A little busier than the centre, yet calmer than Torrevieja's urban beaches.

Central section (promenade)

The main zone — opposite the promenade, restaurants and our office. Full facilities: chiringuitos, sunbeds, showers, toilets, playgrounds. The most convenient area for families.

Northern section (towards Guardamar)

The quietest, most natural stretch. The beach widens and crowds thin out. From here you can see the Guardamar dunes. No chiringuitos or facilities — just sand and sea. For those who prefer solitude.

Beach facilities

  • Chiringuitos — beach bars serving drinks, snacks and full meals. Open May to October.
  • Sunbed and parasol hire — €5–8 for a sunbed, €4–6 for a parasol per day.
  • Lifeguards — daily from June to September, typically 10:00–19:00.
  • Showers and toilets — free, located along the promenade.
  • Playgrounds — several zones on the sand and on the promenade.
  • Accessibility — wooden boardwalks to the water, adapted bathing chairs.
  • Volleyball courts — 2–3 courts in the central section.

Best time to swim

MonthWater temperatureCrowdingNote
May18–20°CLowCool for swimming, great for walks
June22–24°CMediumComfortable water, few tourists
July25–27°CHighPerfect water, peak season
August26–28°CHighWarmest water, most crowded
September24–26°CMediumBest month: warm water, fewer people
October21–23°CLowStill swimmable, beach nearly empty

Our personal tip: September is the best time. The water is still warm from the summer heat, the tourists have left, and the promenade restaurants are still open. The perfect balance.

The La Mata promenade

The Paseo Marítimo de La Mata is a promenade approximately 2 kilometres long, running along the central and southern beach. Wide, tiled, with palm trees, benches and lanterns. Here you will find:

  • Sea-view restaurants (Spanish, Italian, Scandinavian cuisine)
  • Cafés and bars for morning coffee and evening cocktails
  • Souvenir and beachwear shops
  • Our Granfield Estate office (C.C. Parquemar)

An evening stroll along the promenade at sunset is one of the great pleasures of life in La Mata. This is not an exaggeration — we do it ourselves.

Property near the beach

Beach proximity is the number one factor when choosing property in La Mata. Promenade apartments cost 20–30% more, but they also let faster and at higher rates.

Our office is right on the promenade. We know every complex near the beach and will help you find what suits you.

Frequently asked questions

Is La Mata Beach really one of the best on the Costa Blanca?

Yes. The beach consistently receives the Blue Flag and features in regional best-beach rankings. Its width (40–80 m), water quality, gentle entry and natural setting (Guardamar dune views, no high-rises) set it apart from the urban beaches along the coast.

Can I bring my dog to La Mata Beach?

Dogs are not allowed on the main beach from June to September. Outside that period there are no restrictions. The nearest dedicated dog beach is in Torrevieja (Playa del Cura, winter period) or Guardamar.

Are there water sports on the beach?

In the central section, SUP boards, kayaks and pedalos are available for hire during the summer season. Kitesurfing and windsurfing take place on the northern stretch, where there is more wind.

Is it safe to swim with children?

Yes. Gentle entry to the water, fine sand with no rocks, lifeguards from June to September, children's areas — La Mata Beach is ideal for families with young children. Waist depth is reached 30–50 metres from the shore.
